Participation
at Table 449
Table 449 is the central pillar of our work in defense of human rights in the Javari Valley. It is a space for joint coordination created to comply with the Precautionary Measures (MC-449-22) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). Established in response to the assassinations of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips in 2022, the Table coordinates protection actions aimed at members of the Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javari Valley – UNIVAJA and local partners who remain under threat, as well as territorial protection and monitoring of investigations into assassinations and threats in the Javari Valley, in addition to actions that promote the memory of Dom and Bruno.
The main objective is to coordinate the Brazilian State, civil society, and international organizations to guarantee life, physical integrity, and the non-repetition of the violations that led to the murders of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips. There is an urgent need to find structural solutions that guarantee security, participation, and transparency in the region. (Variable term) July 2026, The action plan of Mesa 449 goes beyond immediate security. It demands an official retraction from the Brazilian State and recognition of the fundamental role of indigenous peoples in locating the bodies of Bruno and Dom.
